Poland | Cafe Camelot (Krakow): the place where the meeting lost its significance in the 1920s

And buildings, like people, have their destiny. The road can turn unexpectedly even when things seem to be settled naturally, but despite the fact that time flows, the walls continue to murmur stories for those who are willing to listen to them.

Cafe Camelot: rickety walls, cramped chairs. Why would you choose such a place among so many wonderful cafes that Krakow throws your way? I’ll tell you why we chose it: for the colourful history, secretly whispered.
The slanderous mouth of the world talked for a long time about what happened in this respectable house at the beginning of the 20s. It is no less true. Yes, you guessed right: at the beginning of the 20th century, a brothel was popular among local artists.

When the “meeting” was no longer going to take place, the building fell into ruin for a long time. Then, it reinvented itself: it worked as a locksmith workshop, in 1960 it became a filming set for “Awantura o Basie”, and since 1992 it has hosted a cafe. The first cafe in Krakow where espresso was served with mineral water. There is no need to dwell long on the name: it comes from the Loch Camelot cabaret.

Café Camelot “could be my favourite coffee shop in the world”, David Streitfeld once wrote in the Washington Post. He praises the apple pie, the speciality of the house, but he is enthusiastic about the arrangement and the charming decoration of the cafe: “It has three rooms, one of which has a table perched by the window if you feel like eating on a stage”.

Today, the floor creaks under the round tables on which there are candlesticks with candles that will be lit, and the place of the boudoir perfume has been taken by the bitter smell of freshly ground coffee. The red lanterns have disappeared from the short halls. Only the walls remained pink. Cunning eyes from naive paintings placed in watercolours on the walls watch you carefully: are you sitting down or not? Yes, I say: it can be the most romantic place in Krakow.

Beyond the cafe, Café Camelot is a cultural institution. For the inhabitants of Krakow, it is inextricably linked to the Loch Camelot cabaret, which has performances every weekend in the Romanesque cellars, the only ones dating from the 13th century (the current building has undergone many reconstructions, its final form being given in the second half of the 13th century 19th century). letters signed by King Zygmunt August from the 16th century and a collection of Nikifor paintings.

Where is Café Camelot located? In the old centre, at the intersection of Tomasz and Jana streets. On the corner. The story caught me in its nets and I omitted to tell you about the menu. You can consult it here.
